NFL Spine Injury Roundup: Week 5

NFL-roundup

During Week 5, there were several concussions once again, although there were some concerning back and neck injuries as well. Let’s take a look at the injuries this week.

Concussions

Arizona Cardinals – Drew Stanton (Quarterback) – Stanton left the field during the third quarter of Sunday’s game. He was diagnosed with a concussion and didn’t return. This is particularly concerning for the Cardinals, as their starting quarterback Carson Palmer has still not been cleared for play following a shoulder injury.

Buffalo Bills – Marquise Goodwin (Wide Receiver) – While Goodwin had to sit out last week’s game following a concussion, he was back for the game Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Carolina Panthers – Josh Norman (Cornerback) – Norman, who also sustained a shoulder injury during Sunday’s game, will undergo concussion protocol this week.

Chicago Bears – Chris Conte (Safety) – Conte left Sunday’s game at the end of the first quarter with a concussion.

Chicago Bears – Jeremiah Ratliff (Defensive Tackle) – Following his concussion during Week 2, Ratliff sat out yet another game this week. He has practiced on a limited basis, but has not been cleared for full play yet.

Cincinnati Bengals – Vontaze Burfict (Linebacker) – After suffering a concussion in both the first and second games of the season and a bye week last week, it appears that Burfict is still not ready to get back in the game.

Detroit Lions – Joique Bell (Running Back) – It was confirmed that Bell sustained a concussion during the Lions’ game last weekend. He was unable to play in Sunday’s game.

Jacksonville Jaguars – Dwayne Gratz (Cornerback) – Gratz left the Week 4 game with a concussion, and was not cleared to play in Sunday’s game.

New England Patriots – Danny Amendola (Wide Receiver) – Amendola was evaluated for a concussion during the second quarter, but returned later on in the game.

San Diego Chargers – Donald Brown (Running Back) – Brown was taken to the locker room during Sunday’s game to be evaluated for an injury, which was later confirmed to be a concussion. He did not return to the game.

Tennessee Titans – Blidi Wreh-Wilson (Cornerback) – Wreh-Wilson left the Week 4 game and was later confirmed to have a concussion. He did not participate in practice and did not play in Sunday’s game.

Neck Injuries

Buffalo Bills – Ron Brooks (Cornerback) – Brooks landed directly on his head after colliding with Jerome Couplin of the Detroit Lions during a punt return on Sunday. He was placed on a spinal stabilization board and carted off the field. He was evaluated for a neck injury and did not return to the game.

Back Injuries

Chicago Bears – Jon Bostic (Linebacker) – Bostic left the field during the third quarter of Sunday’s game with a back injury, although no further information was given about his injury.

Miami Dolphins – Randy Starks (Defensive Tackle) – Starks missed the Week 4 game due to a back injury. Week 5 was a bye week for the Dolphins, but it was reported that Starks returned to practice Monday.

San Francisco 49ers – Vernon Davis (Tight End) – Although initial reports about Davis’ Week 4 back injury seemed to be positive, he was unable to play in the Week 5 game. It is known that Davis was having back spasms, but the cause of the spasms has not been announced as of yet.
