NFL Spine Injury Roundup: Week 3

NFL-roundup

Now that the Week 3 games in the NFL are complete, there have been several concussions, back, and neck injuries. Let’s take a look at where these players stand before the Week 4 games begin.

Concussions

Denver Broncos – Virgil Green (Tight End) – During Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, Green displayed concussion-like symptoms following a tackle during the second quarter. At this point, it is questionable as to whether he will return for the week 4 game.

Cincinnati Bengals – Vontaze Burfict (Linebacker) – Burfict suffered from a concussion in both the season opener and Week 2 games. After receiving two concussions in such a short period of time, it is likely the team will give him more time to recover. Week 4 is a bye week for the Bengals, so Burfict won’t have to worry about sitting out for that game.

Chicago Bears – Jeremiah Ratliff (Defensive Tackle) – Ratliff sustained a concussion during the Bears’ Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers. It was confirmed that he would sit out for the Week 3 game while he recovers.

Oakland Raiders – Nick Roach (Linebacker) – Roach has been slow to recover from a concussion during the preseason, and has sat out since the beginning of the season. While his condition is improving, he has not been cleared for full contact.

Philadelphia Eagles – LeSean McCoy (Running Back) – McCoy suffered a blow to the head during Sunday’s game and appeared dazed, although doctors cleared him to play. There has been some public outcry, as McCoy was cleared within 5 minutes, while the NFL guidelines state that the test should take 10-15 minutes.

Back Injuries

Buffalo Bills – Chris Williams (Guard) – Williams left Sunday’s game in the second quarter with a lower back injury. He has had a history of lower back problems and missed preseason games. The team has not announced whether he will play during Week 4.

St. Louis Rams – Barrett Jones (Center) – Jones has been out with an unspecified back injury and has not played in any games this season. He is not expected back until next month.

Dallas Cowboys – Tony Romo (Quarterback) – There was some concern about Romo heading into Week 3, as he sat out of practice due to feeling tightness in his back. Romo has already had 2 back surgeries. However, he did play in Sunday’s game and is listed as active.

New York Giants – James Brewer (Offensive Lineman) – While Brewer has participated in some practice sessions following a back injury, he is still listed as inactive.

Neck Injuries

Buffalo Bills – Jonathan Meeks (Safety) – Meeks suffered from a neck injury in the preseason. While Meeks’ injury will not require surgery to heal, but recovery is expected to last about 12 weeks. He was placed on injured reserve.

Detroit Lions – James Ihedigbo (Safety) – Ihedigbo has yet to play during the regular season due to a neck injury. Although he has been practicing on a limited basis, he has yet to be cleared to play.

As the season continues, I will be giving weekly updates on the status of these injured players as well as any new injuries. Stay tuned!
